The Society has secured 15 acres of outstanding land at the foothills of Mount Zero with views to the Grampian ranges on the Ararat-Halls Gap road. Located just five minutes from the township of Halls Gap the land is ideally situated on one of the main scenic routes in the Grampians.
Through a philanthropic donation the Society has secured a long term lease over the land which will be developed as the home of Australia’s wildlife arts collection.
President of GWAS Glenda Lewin says the acquisition of the site is a significant milestone in achieving our vision to create a centre of excellence for exhibiting wildlife art. “It will also create a home for promoting the extraordinary depth of artistic talent in the Grampians region.
Now we begin the challenging task of gaining support from both Federal and State government agencies along with private sponsors to support our vision of creating Australia’s first truly national gallery for wildlife art” said Glenda Lewin.

A treat for film buffs
In the Grampians!
Several rare, vintage documentaries and a beautiful little, never before seen, insight into the Lyrebird filmed renowned wildlife painter and artist, Stephen Powell, will be screened at Halls Gap on August 30th as part of the 2nd “Grampians Wildlife Arts Festival”.
Over generations, the spectacular beauty of the Grampians Region has captivated the imagination of many Australians. Together with the Halls Gap film Society and the support of the National Film and Sound Archives and ACMI, the Festival is able to show some unique footage of the Grampians, Ballarat and Stawell taken in 1917 and 1925. Complementing these short films will be 3 films produced in the 1950’s; including a rare 14-minute gem recorded by the Straford Brothers on their holiday in The Grampians in 1954.
The films have been acquired in digital form through the auspices of NFSA and ACMI as part of the Grampians Wildlife Art Society’s policy of community ownership and long-term vision of establishing a significant collection of Australia’s natural history art. Following this evening’s event, they will be given, on permanent loan, to the Northern Grampians Shire Archives and will be made available to schools and other community groups.
Entry is by gold coin donation, light refreshments will be served and every-one is welcome.
